Leon Leonwood Bean (L.L) founded the company in 1912; he was a person who was in love with the outdoors. It started as a very small direct mail order business and started growing through the years.

In the late 60’s (1967) L.L died and his grand son Leon Gorman was named president. In the 70’s the company kept expanding with new stores and started accepting credit card orders. In the 80’s the company records the largest sales increase of 41.8%. The 90’s proved even more successful by opening their first international store in Japan as well as a new store for kids and becoming online with llbean.com in 1995.
The company’s growth continued and today it has around 4000 employees, many retail stores as well as factory outlet stores on the east and west coasts. It also has an international website, a worldwide catalog and nine retail stores in Japan.
